The Winter Queen, Beira, has a trio of hags who often accompany her. Each one appears withered and old, but are strong enough to tear the limbs off the oldest trolls. They cackle like hens, unnerving those around them.

Donia, the current Winter Girl, taunts them, particularly Agatha, showing she is not intimidated or afraid. Agatha spits at her in response.

Later, Agatha accompanies Beira on a visit to Donia. Interestingly, on this occasion only Agatha is there (the other two hags are absent). At this point, Beira appears convinced Aislinn is the Summer Queen; and is just as convinced Donia isn't doing what Beira told her to do earlier in the novel: anything to keep Ash from touching the Winter Queen's staff.

Agatha laughs in response to Beira's threats against Donia, but her laughter is misunderstood (possibly deliberately misunderstood) as laughter over the possibility Beira might lose "the Game". Furious (either at Agatha, at the very real threat Ash poses, or at Donia's defiance), Beira freezes Agatha, killing her. She leaves the body on Donia's porch, certainly as a warning of things to come.

In dying, Agatha's spirit is pushed from her physical body. Donia sees the shadowy shape wringing her hands and crying silently over her own death. There's no "heaven" or "hell"; no afterlife for the Fey. They become shades, wandering until they fade.

Evan, one of Keenan's guardsmen who watches over Donia, comes to Donia after Beira leaves to ask if the guards can help by removing and burying it Agatha's shell.
